New to Australia? How to Pick the Right Suburb

Choosing where to live can be one of the hardest decisions when you're new to Australia.

You might know which city you're moving to, but with so many suburbs to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start.

Should you live close to the city? Somewhere quieter? Or somewhere that gives you more space for your budget?

Start With Your Everyday Routine

Think about the places you will visit regularly.

This could be your university, workplace, local shops, gym, or anywhere else you expect to go often.

A suburb that works well for your daily routine can make settling into a new country feel much easier.

Look at Transport

You do not necessarily need to live right next to the city to have a convenient location.

Check what public transport is available and how easy it is to get where you need to go. Look at the actual travel time rather than just the distance.

If you plan to drive, also consider parking and how easy it is to access the main roads you will use regularly.

Think About Your Budget

Different suburbs can have very different rental prices.

Before choosing an area, work out what you can realistically afford and then compare what different suburbs offer within that budget.

Remember to consider your other living costs as well. A cheaper rental may not save you much if you are spending significantly more on transport.

Check What's Around You

When you're new to Australia, having everyday essentials nearby can make a big difference.

Look for things such as supermarkets, pharmacies, cafés, parks and other services that you are likely to use regularly.

You can also look at the suburb at different times of the day to get a better feel for what it is actually like to live there.

Give Yourself Room to Change Your Mind

Your first suburb does not have to be your forever suburb.

It can take time to work out what you like about living in Australia and what matters most to you.

You may discover that you prefer being closer to the city, having more space, or living somewhere quieter than you originally expected.

The goal is to find somewhere that works for you now, rather than trying to make the perfect decision straight away.

Expert Tip!

Before choosing a suburb, spend some time looking beyond the rental listing. Check the transport, local shops, commute and general surroundings so you can get a better idea of what everyday life there might actually be like.
